Section 9 - the Location of vehicles on the carriageway

Section 8Section 9Section 10

The location of vehicles on the carriageway

9.1. Number of lanes for motor vehicles is determined by the markings and (or) signs 5.15.1, 5.15.2, 5.15.7, 5.15.8 and if they are not available, then by the drivers themselves given the width of the carriageway, vehicle dimensions and necessary spacing between them. At the same time, width of the carriageway intended for oncoming traffic on two-way roads without dividing line, is considered to be half the width of the carriageway, located on the right side, not counting the local widening of carriageway (transitively-high-speed bandwidth, additional lanes on the rise, the pockets for stops of route vehicles).

9.2. On two-way roads of four or more lanes, it is prohibited to go for overtaking or de-tour on the lane, intended for oncoming traffic.

On such roads turns to the right or U-turn can be carried out on intersections and in other places where it is not forbidden by the Rules, signs and/or markings.

9.3. On two-way traffic, with three lanes with markup (except markup 1.9), from which the central lane is used for the both directions of traffic movement, permission to enter on this lane is only for overtaking, de-tour, right turn or U-turn. Going to the right lane, intended for oncoming traffic, is prohibited.

9.4. Outside of the built-up area, and also in the built-up area on the roads, marked with signs 5.1  or 5.3, or where it is allowed to drive faster than 50 km/h, drivers should drive vehicle when possible closer to the left edge of the roadway. Never take the right lane when the left lane is vacant.

In built-up areas with a view of the requirements of this paragraph and paragraphs 9.5, 16.1 and 24.2 of Rules drivers of vehicles may use the lane most convenient for them. In heavy traffic, when all lanes are busy, changing the lane is only allowed to turn right or to the left, U-turn, stop, or de-tour of obstacles.

However, on any kind of roads, having three or more lanes in one direction, taking the right lane is permitted only in heavy traffic, when other lanes are busy, as well as for overtaking, turning right or U-turn, and for cargo vehicles with a permissible maximum mass exceeding 2.5 tonnes - only to turn right or U-turn. Entry on the right-hand lane on roads with one-way traffic for stopping and parking is carried out in accordance with the paragraph 12.1 of the Rules.

The movement of vehicles in one lane at a speed greater than on the next lane, is not considered to be overtaking.

9.5. Vehicles, speed of movement of which should not exceed 40 km/h, or which for technical reasons can not develop such a speed, should move on the far left lane, except de-tour, overtaking or changing lane before turning right, U-turn or stopping where it is permitted on the right side of the road.

9.6. It is allowed to move on tram routes on adjacent areas, located on the right at the same level with the carriageway, when all the lanes of this direction are busy, as well as for de-tour, overtaking, right turn, or U-turn with account of point 8.5 of the Rules.

But, there should not be interference to the tram. Movement on the tram path of oncoming direction is prohibited. If on the intersecttion (crossroads) signs 5.15.1  or 5.15.2  are installed movement on tram routes through the intersection is prohibited.

9.7. If the carriageway is divided into lanes by lines of markup, the movement of vehicles shall be carried out strictly in the marked up lanes. Movement on the dotted line markup is allowed only during lane changing.

9.8. When turning on the road with a reversable movement lane, the driver should drive the vehicle in such a way that when leaving the intersection  the vehicle should take the far left lane. Changing the lane is allowed only after the driver is satisfied that the movement in this direction is allowed and in the other lanes.

9.9. The movement of vehicles is prohibited on the divider strip and roadside, pavement and pedestrian paths (except for the cases stipulated in paragraphs 12.1, 24.2 Of The Rules). The movement of road-maintenance vechiles and utility services (electricity, telephone, fire), as well as the vehicles carrying goods to trading (malls, market) and other enterprises and objects, located directly at the roadside, pavement or pedestrian tracks, entrance on the shortest road is allowed in the absence of other available entrance. The safety of traffic should be ensured.

9.10. The driver shall comply with such a distance to the vehicle in front, which would avoid the collision, as well as the lateral spacing, providing the security of the movement.

9.11. Outside the built-up areas on two-way roads with two lanes, the driver of the vehicle, for which the speed is limited, as well as the driver of a vehicle (and with trailer) with a length of more than 7 m should maintain between them and vechile moving ahead such a distance, so as a vechile overtaking it could without interference take the previously occupied by lane. This requirement does not apply when moving on sections of road on which overtaking is prohibited, as well as in heavy traffic and the movement in the organized transport column.

9.12. On roads with two-way traffic in the absence of a dividing strip, elements of road structures (support of bridges, overpasses and the like), located in the middle of the roadway, must be passed by the driver from the left, if signs and markings do not prescribe otherwise.
