Section 8 - the Beginning of the movement, maneuvers

Section 7Section 8Section 9

The beginning of the movement, maneuvers

8.1. Before the beginning of the movement, changing lanes, turn (U-turn) and stopping, the driver is obliged to give the light indicator signal of the appropriate direction, and if they are missing or broken, signal by hand. When performing a maneuver, it should not be dangerous to traffic, as well as interfere with other participants of road traffic.

Signal of a left turn is elongated left hand in the left direction or right-hand, stretched to the side and bent at the elbow angle upwards. Signal of a right turn (U-turn) correspond to the elongated right  hand in the right direction or the left hand, stretched to the side and bent at the elbow angle upwards. Brake signal is left or right hand raised up.

8.2. Giving a signal of direction by indicator lamps or hand must be made in advance before the start of the manoeuvre and cease immediately after its completion (the alarm by hand can be completed immediately before performing the maneuver). This signal should not mislead other participants of the movement.

The direction indicator signal does not give the driver any priority and does not exempt from the taking the precautionary measures.

8.3. At the entrance on the road from the adjacent (residential) territory, the driver must give way to vehicles and pedestrians, moving on it, and when exiting the road - to pedestrians and cyclists, whose way of the movement driver crosses.

8.4. When changing the lane, the driver must give way to vehicles travelling along the way on adjacent lane without a change of direction. While changing lanes of both vehicles moving together along the way, the driver must give way to the vehicle, which is on the left.

8.5. Before turning to the left, to the right or U-turn the driver shall be obliged to take a lane on the carriageway reserved for traffic in this direction, except in cases where there is a turn at the entrance to the crossroads, where a circular motion is organised.

If there is a tramway on the rightside adjacent area, located on the same level with the carriageway, right turn and U-turn must be carried out over them, if signs 5.15.1  or 5.15.2  or markup 1.18 does not directs other regulations of the movement. There should be no interference to the tram.

8.6. Turn should be carried out in such a way so that when leaving the intersection of the road, the vehicle is not located on the side of the oncomming traffic.

When turning to the left the vehicle should move as closer to as possible to the left edge of the roadway.

8.7. If the vehicle due to its dimensions or for other reasons can not turn with observance of requirements of the paragraph 8.5 of the rules, shall be allowed to deviate from them in the condition of ensuring the safety of traffic and if this will not create interference to other means of transport.

8.8. When turning to the right, or taking U-turn in a place other than the intersection, the driver of the vehicle shall give way to oncoming vehicles and to tram moving in the same direction.

If the width of the roadway is insufficient to perform the U-turn from the right most lane in a place other than an intersection, the maneuver can be performed from the far left lane of the carriageway (the left side). The driver must give way to vechiles moving in the same direction and to oncoming vehicles.

8.9. In cases, when the trajectory of the movement of the vehicles meet, and the priority of passage is not written in the Rules, the priority of the way must be given to the driver, whose vehicle is approaching from the left.

8.10. If there is a deceleration lane, driver intending to turn, must promptly adapt this lane and reduce speed only on it.

If the place of entry to the road has acceleration lane, driver should accelerate on it and then change to the next lane, giving way to vehicles travelling on that lane.

8.11. The U-turn is prohibited:

  • on pedestrian crossings;
  • in the tunnels;
  • on the bridges, overpasses, overbridges and under them;
  • at railway crossings;
  • in places where visibility of the road at least in one direction is less than 100 m;
  • in the places of stopping (bus stop) of fixed-route vehicles.

8.12. The movement of the vehicle in reverse gear is permitted provided that this maneuver will be safe and will not create interference to other traffic participants. If necessary, the driver shall take the assistance of other persons.

Reversing is prohibited on intersections and in the places, where U-turn is prohibited according to the paragraph 8.11 of the Rules.
