The installation of special light and sound signals

In the Republic of India, the number of beacon vehicles, as per norms, at any given time should not exceed 50 in the center or in the state government.

Law, policy and rule

The list of people entitled to the colours is detailed by the central government and the state government. The law which governs the beacon and its colors is stated in clause III of rule 108, Central Motor Vehicles Rules of 1989.

Code law for beacons

In pursuance of powers under clause (iii) of provison to rule 108 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989, the Central Government has, vide Notification No. 52 (E)/ 11-01-2002 of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India, specified which vehicle carrying the following high dignitaries shall be permitted to use:

  • Chief Justices of High Courts Within & Outside their respective jurisdictions
  • Justices of High Courts Within their respective jurisdictions
  • Governors of States within and outside their respective States.
  • Chief Ministers of States Within and outside their respective States.
  • Cabinet Ministers of states Within their respective States.
  • Chairman of Committees of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
  • Leaders of the Opposition of the State Legislative Assembly and Legialative Council in their respective States.
  • Chairman of the Committees of State Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council in their respective States.
  • Chairman, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Commission
  • Chairman of all National Commissions of the Union.
  • Ambassadors Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and High Commissioners of Commonwealth Countries accredited to India.
