Towing motor vehicles

20.1. Towing on rigid or flexible coupling hitch should be carried out only in the presence of the driver in the towed vehicle, except in cases when the construction of the rigid strip provides a straight following of the towed vehicle along the trajectory of the towing vechile.

20.2. When towing on a flexible or rigid coupling hitch it is prohibited - the transportation of people in the towed bus, and in the back of a towed truck, and when towed by partial loading - presence of people in the cabin or in the back of the towed vehicle, and also in the back of the towing vechile.

20.3. When towing on a flexible coupling hitch it must be ensured that the distance between the towing and the towed vehicle is within 4 - 6 m, and when towing on a rigid coupling hitch - not more than 4 m.

Flexible coupling hitch should be marked in accordance with paragraph 9 of the basic provisions.

20.4. Towing shall be prohibited:

  • of transport vehicles, which are not having working steering* (it is allowed towing by method of partial loading);
  • two or more means of transport;
  • vehicles with inactive brake system*if their actual weight is more than half of the actual weight of the towing vehicle. When the actual mass of the towed vechile is lesser, towing of such means of transport shall be allowed only on a rigid coupling hitch or by the method of partial loading;
  • by motorcycles without the side trailer, as well as of motorcycles;
  • in icy conditions on a flexible coupling hitch.

20.5. The speed of towing vehicle shall not exceed 25 km/h.

20.6. There shall be clearly displayed on the rear of the vehicle being towed in black letters not less than 75 millimeters high and on a white ground the words "ON TOW".
